Important Update: Changes to Free PPID (Cushing’s) Testing from February 2026

If your horse has PPID (Cushing’s disease), or you’re monitoring an older horse, there are some upcoming changes to the Care About Cushing’s free PPID testing scheme that we’d like to make you aware of.

What’s changing?

From February 2026, free* PPID blood testing through the Care About Cushing’s scheme will be offered during specific times of the year, rather than all year round.

When will free testing be available?

Free* diagnostic PPID testing will now be available during two key periods:

  • Spring: March & AprilThis is when the risk of laminitis is highest, making early diagnosis especially important.

  • Autumn: September & OctoberThis is when the ACTH blood test is most accurate for diagnosing PPID.

Outside of these months, diagnostic testing will still be available, but it will not be covered by the free testing scheme.

New: Free dose-checker test after starting treatment

There’s good news for horses starting treatment with Prascend®:

  • A new free dose-checker blood test* will be available 4–6 weeks after treatment begins

  • This allows us to check early on that the medication dose is correct and working effectively

Previously, the first free monitoring test was only available after six months, so this change allows for earlier support and adjustment if needed.

Ongoing monitoring

  • Horses already receiving treatment will still be eligible for a free annual monitoring test*

  • This can be carried out 12 months after the dose-checker test

What does this mean for you?

  • If you’re concerned your horse may have PPID, we recommend contacting us during spring or autumn to take advantage of the free diagnostic testing

  • If your horse is starting treatment, we’ll be able to check progress much sooner than before

  • We’ll continue to advise on the most appropriate testing and management for your horse, regardless of the scheme timings

If you have any questions about PPID, testing, or your horse’s individual risk, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

*Free testing available as part of the Care About Cushing’s scheme and subject to eligibility.
